My Favorite Lessons
All lessons provided through the Ag in the Classroom program are aligned with the Iowa Standards. Lessons are designed to be engaging with all students, fun and interactive so that students feel included and excited about farming in Iowa. With over 50 lesson options, there is bound to be a lesson that connects with students. These are just some of my favorites!
Apple Production
Opinion Writing
In 1st and 2nd grade, students learn about Opinion Writing. Why not combine eating tasty apples and writing. Teachers enjoy this lesson immensely because it gets students tasting different types of apples, using their 5 senses to come up with a list of what they like about each apple, and more writing! Students then get up in front of the class to recite their work.
Pizza Across the USA
Math and Geography
Students love pizza and they love this lesson too! Students create their own pizza by finding where their favorite ingredients are grown in the United States.
Corn and Corn Free
Economics and math
Did you know that Corn is everywhere? From Diapers, Coke, batteries and Captain Crunch cereal, corn is everywhere. Students play a game where they have to decide if common household products have Corn oil, meal, flour or syrup in them.
Iowans Who Made a Difference
Social Studies
To celebrate Black History Month, we focus on Iowans who made a difference in agriculture. One of those people is George Washington Carver, who overcame adversity, graduated from Iowa State, owned his own farm and saved people's lives by developing uses for the peanut.
